The Growth Mindset. If you read the book, it almost looks as if the Growth Mindset is the solution for everything that is wrong with the world. If only the leaders of Israel and Palestina had a growth mindset, peace would have been eternal\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, what does the science say about growth mindset?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe foundations of mind-set theory are not firm and bold claims about mind-set appear to be overstated\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Burgoyne, 2020)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere is a weak relationship between mindset and (academic) achievement\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Sisk et al, 2018)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that there is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no significant evidence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that shows a relationship between performance <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the mindset of the individual, as most of the experiments have been done at schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And we have to admit, we were also impressed when reading the book, and it did make us more aware of our own patterns of thinking\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, it\u2019s not the panacea that the \u201cbelievers\u201d would like us to think.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us propose a few other mindsets that can improve performance at work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grit: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sustained <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">persistence<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> applied toward long-term achievement. It combines resilience, ambition, and self-control when achieving goals. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Duckworth, 2016)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Can you imagine what your business would look like if all your staff had more grit?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-efficacy: this refers to an individual&#8217;s belief in their capacity to execute behaviors necessary to perform\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Bandura, 1977, 1986, 1997)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Self-efficacy reflects confidence in the ability to control one&#8217;s own motivation, behavior, and environment. Even if the self-efficacy is based on nothing, it still has a stronger correlation with performance than growth mindset! So, increasing it in your staff is good for performance!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosity: Results from a validation study confirmed the hypothesis regarding the significance of curiosity for job performance (Mussel, 2012). Especially for knowledge-heavy roles that are subject to constant change, it helps if the staff have a \u201ccurious mindset\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The good news is, all of these mindsets can be improved in your staff members, with the help of <strong>culture, coaching<\/strong> v\u00e0 <strong>training<\/strong>.
