Once a year, there is budget for a trip. The bigger the budget, the farther the trip. It is seen as a show of appreciation to the staff. And it is! It is a really nice gesture and a good chance to see your colleagues in a different setting, drinking, eating, and having fun on the company\u2019s dime.\u00a0 Memories are made, anecdotes are created, everyone in the same T-shirt\u2026 and then it\u2019s back to the office. The office, where:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">team members still gossip about each other.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teams have no shared purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colleagues still don\u2019t give feedback to each other to improve.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic behavior is accepted because of hierarchy.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unclear expectations and vague communication are daily occurrences.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teams don\u2019t communicate with other teams.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creativity and innovation are stifled because of urgency.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, hey! You had fun and that\u2019s what counts\u2026..right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some companies feel a bit more enlightened and add some games, where people have to collaborate. More fun, a bit of competition, and great photos for the company website. <\/span><b>But did anyone actually <\/b><b><i>learn<\/i><\/b><b> something?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Are they applying these learnings in their work afterwards? <\/span><b>Has communication or team performance improved?<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> How do you know?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, you should continue your yearly team outing! It\u2019s something staff expect and look forward to. But please, don\u2019t think that\u2019s all it takes to build <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high-performing teams<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
