Myth of the Week #4: Comfort Zones Are Performance Killers

Claim: Staying where you feel safe keeps you from growing. Feeling uncomfortable is the cost of getting better.

Reality Check: While stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to growth, constantly pushing yourself to discomfort can be counterproductive. Contemporary research suggests that moderate levels of stress can enhance performance, but excessive stress can impair it, supporting the idea of an optimal balance for growth (Schwabe & Wolf, 2013).
