Myth of the Week #8: Successful People Read Every Day

Claim: Successful people read every day.

Reality Check: While it’s true that many successful people are avid readers, the notion that reading daily is a prerequisite for success is oversimplified and a good example of causation vs correlation. Success is multifaceted and can be achieved through various means that don’t necessarily involve reading. Moreover, the type and quality of reading matter more than the quantity. Studies suggest that reading for learning or self-improvement is more beneficial than reading for leisure or escape when it comes to professional success (Nandi & Plante, 2020). However, success can also stem from hands-on experience, networking, and other non-reading-related activities. Reading is a tool, not a magic formula for success.
